Prince Albert now has two rugby clubs; Whiskey Jacks enter first season

Over the past 12 years, the Saskatchewan Rivers Dragons rugby union team has been graduating more than 150 players from their program.

The local rugby community figured it was time to take some of those players and create a men’s team.

The Prince Albert Whiskey Jacks, named after the bird, will play their inaugural season in the North Sask Rugby Union senior men’s second division, made up of about 60 per cent of Dragons alumni.

“We’ve been building up a base of young men that want to further their rugby career,” said Mark McElligott, long-time Dragons coach and treasurer for the Whiskey Jacks. “Someone investigated earlier this winter about the possibility of a men’s team playing a couple of exhibition games this year just to try it out, and it just took off from there. We have 30 guys signed up that are committed to play.

“I think it’s just going to keep growing from here. I’m quite excited to see what’s happening with the men’s team.”

Although they’re new and playing against well-established teams in Saskatoon, McElligott believes the Whiskey Jacks could be a tough beat.

“I think we’re going to be competitive right off the bat,” said McElligott. “I think we’ve got a good mix of guys with experience and young guys with four or five [years] of junior rugby experience behind them.”

McElligott said it was a little early to say how his Dragons would shape up this season, but that the Dragons will rely on their veterans to help coach some of the team’s younger players. Two of those players will be standoff Ashton Milligan, who will help lead the backs, and forward Ryland Gibb to lead the pack.

Both have played with the provincial team at the U17 level with the Dragons for at least four years, with Milligan entering his fifth with the Dragons. Milligan also played U-18 men’s Ultra Sevens Rugby tournament in Colombia in December.

“We’re expecting big things from both of those two,” said McElligott.
