Dragons turn All Blacks to ash 35-7 in home opener

Due to Tuesday’s cancellation, the Saskatchewan Rivers Dragons high school rugby team’s season had a late start.

But it was well worth the wait.

The Dragons ran over the All Blacks 35-7 in their first game of the season Thursday at Prime Minister’s Park to get their year started off on the right foot.

Dragons number eight Ryland Gibb scored the first try of the season. Right after an All Blacks’ scrum on their own 22-yard line, the ball squirted out to Gibb’s side. He picked it up and muscled his way over the try line.

Throughout the match, the Dragons were able to control the scrum and get a good go-forward from their pack, allowing openings on the edges and wings for the backs to attack in.

“I can’t ask for a better team for this, it’s just great,” said Gibb. “We’re working hard, everyone’s working hard out here.

“This team is really, really fast and really athletic. They’re just a great bunch of guys.”

Although Gibb admitted his team made a few errors, one leading to the All Blacks’ lone try, he believes they can develop and become “contenders” by season’s end.

“Everyone’s talking and communicating and being aggressive,” said Gibb. “It helps move the game along.”

Fly-half Ashton Milligan had a big night, scoring 20 points for the Dragons. He scored a try, was 3-4 on try conversions and 3-3 on penalty goals.

Gibb opened the scoring in the game’s opening moments, but the All Blacks took a 7-5 lead after they responded quickly. After that, it was all Dragons

Ryley Dooley and Ashton Milligan scored tries to make it 19-7 after the first half. Milligan then scored three consecutive penalty goals, before Tristen Franc broke several tackles and put one down in pay dirt to ice the game late.

The Dragons have a pair of games next week, including a home contest on Thursday  against the Harlequins at 6 p.m.

The Dragons also have home matches slated on May 19 against the Wallabies and June 9 against the Springboks.
