Waskesiu and Cooke Municipal rated among the best in the province

The summer edition of Westworld Magazine profiles 10 golf courses in the province, and five are located in northern Saskatchewan.

Waskesiu, which has undergone some renovations in the past few years, is first on the list.

“Originally our main focus was getting the greens back in shape because that was kind of the downside, but Gary Cross, our superintendent took it to a whole new level and did a lot of the contouring of the fairways and widening areas out,” said general manager Tyler Baker.

Baker said he receives a lot of positive feedback from people who have come up from southern Saskatchewan.

“The first thing they see is the trees and you know we’re spoiled to that aspect because every hole is by itself.  As you drive through the southern part of the province, there’s not a whole lot of trees and definition to the area,” said Baker.

Coming in second on the list was Prince Albert’s Cooke Municipal Golf Course, which hosted the Sask. Men’s Amateur last year.

“Having the early spring has really helped the course a lot, looking really green and just is really enjoyable,” said Pro Shop Assistant Drew Ryhorchuk.

When asked what makes Cooke stand up above the rest, Ryhorchuk said it’s the layout of the course.

“It’s very playable and very forgiving but it challenges any golfer at any level, ranging from junior to senior,” he said.

Other northern courses making the list were Evergreen Golf Course in Nipawin, Northern Meadows near Meadow Lake and Elk Ridge Resort.

Here is the complete list:

10) Mainprize Regional Park and Golf Course (Midale)

9)  Sage View Golf Club (Palliser Regional Park)

8)  Evergreen Golf Resort (Nipawin)

7)  Legends Golf Club (Warman)

5)  Elk Ridge Resort

4) Northern Meadows (near Goodsoil and Meadow Lake)
