Two students were involved in a suspected stabbing that put Shellbrook’s W.P. Sandin Public School and Shellbrook Elementary School in lockdown on Friday.

The “possible stabbing” involved a 19-year-old man and a girl under 18 and took place inside the high school around 11:45 a.m., according to an RCMP release on Friday afternoon.

“The 19-year-old male allegedly stabbed a female youth while exiting a classroom,” said RCMP Spokesperson Mandy Maier.

The precautions taken at both of the community’s schools involved locking and monitoring exterior doors as classes continued. By 2:25 p.m. the hold and secure was lifted, the RCMP reports.

“As soon as the call came in [RCMP] were conducting searches through the community,” said Maier. “I know that they called in police dog service, I’m not sure if they were present at the time.”

The girl was taken by ambulance to Shellbrook’s hospital with serious injuries, the statement says.

Shellbrook RCMP found the suspected stabber by 1 p.m. in a Shellbrook home. He was arrested without incident.

According to town residents in the early afternoon, students at the school could only leave if guardians arrived at the school and provided identification.

Phones at the school went straight to voicemail on Friday afternoon.

Shellbrook Elementary School has 165 students between Kindergarten and Grade 6, and 215 students between Grade 7 and 12 attend. W.P. Sandin Public School.

Saskatchewan Rivers School Division has confirmed that the 19-year-old suspect was a student at W.P. Sandin High School.
