Businesses fear impact of ‘big dig’
A major summer construction project involving Second Avenue West, from 15th street to the bridge, has some business owners in the area very concerned.
“The restaurant industry is all about convenience and as soon as you start putting construction or anything that makes it difficult for people to get here, it’s just going to be a deterrent for sales,” said Robert Dunn, owner of Humpty’s.
Dunn said in past construction years, he has taken a hit of almost $100,000.
“There are a couple of fixed costs I can control, my food costs and my labour are the biggest expenses but you know property taxes don’t change, utilities don’t change, etcetera, etcetera, so you know it really affects me when you’re doing a lot less volume,” he said.
