Children make lifelong friendships, ride horses, listen to the seasoned cowboys tell their stories. They run freely, giggling and laughing, checking for ant hills, digging in the sand; never once thinking about their ipads or game machines. They learn about horses and riding and driving, about working together; about the different colors of horses, that each ear on a horse hears different things, why blinders are used and so much more information gleened in general conversation from trail boss, Jim Neubuhr. Those are memories and tidbits of information each of those kids will take with them wherever they go for a lifetime.

This year there were eight wagon teams and usually about 13 horseback riders at a time. Through the four days there were more than 70 people taking part.

This is a no frills adventure and as close as you can get to an old west experience with the covered wagons, outriders, outdoor cooking, evening sing songs and camp fires.

Participants all lend a hand for the betterment of the trip. Horses need to be groomed, fed and watered and so do the people.

There is no crew. Everyone lends a hand including the kids. The ranch provides a wagon and several horses for all experience levels so people can take turns riding on a horse that suits them and then switch off for rides in the covered wagon but those people, including the kids, are expected to help with age appropriate activities.

Those with their own horses are also encouraged to come participate and this year a record number of riders did just that with a large group from the Big River Area.
