Sask. seeding nearly complete, rain needed soon farmer says

Jun 11, 2015 | 12:20 PM

It was a record dry May and June isn’t shaping up to be any better.

For farmers like Jim Hale near Leader, continued dry weather could spell disaster for their crops.

“You know if it was mid-June, maybe start hitting the panic button. I don’t know if guys are quite there, but the forecast doesn’t look all that great,” Hale said.

“It’s a little bit out of your hands. I guess as long as you’ve felt you’ve taken care of everything you can take care of, the rest you really can’t worry about.”

Seeding across the province is virtually complete. The weekly crop report released Thursday by Saskatchewan Agriculture said producers are well ahead of the five year seeding average of 87 per cent.

The province said crops are behind the normal stage of development due to the lack of moisture. Despite scattered rain across the province last week, 60 per cent of producers are reporting their fields are too dry.

Hale said those who seeded early seem to have made out the best in this dry weather.

“The guys that got some more of the frost tolerant stuff in a little earlier, went into pretty decent moisture has come up, and looks not too bad.”

However, Hale said that if they don’t start seeing moisture heading into July it won’t matter when the seed went in.
