‘Buffalo Brendan’ now a Sabre; Pilon to the Isle

Prince Albert Raiders defenceman Brendan Guhle had a pretty good idea that he’d get drafted by an NHL team, but had no idea who would be the suitor.

He found out early Saturday morning as the Buffalo Sabres selected Guhle 51st overall at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft in Sunrise, Florida.

Shortly after getting drafted by the Sabres, Guhle had a brief one-on-one with Sabres general manager Tim Murray.

“He’s a great guy. The first thing he said to me was ‘where did you think you were going to go’ and I said ‘it’s right in my range,’” said Guhle in a video interview on the Sabres’ website. “Then he said ‘what do you think of this city and are you excited,’ and I said I’m really excited and I love the city.”

Guhle had 32 points in a full 72-game season with the Raiders this year. He finished the season strong with 14 points in his last 14 games with a +5 rating. Guhle was the third overall pick by the Raiders in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.

Guhle was ranked anywhere from 56th among North American Skaters by NHL Central Scouting, to 110th by ISS Hockey and just about everywhere in between.

Just like his uncle

Duck Lake’s Ryan Pilon was picked 147th overall by the New York Islanders in the fifth round. With the Brandon Wheat Kings, Pilon had 11 goals and 52 points in the regular season, and another 12 points in 19 postseason games this season.

Rich Pilon, Ryan’s older cousin, was also drafted by the Islanders 143rd overall back in the 1986 draft. Rich played his first 12 NHL seasons with the Islanders from 1988-2000.

Gennaro a Jet

In the seventh round, the Winnipeg Jets used the 203rd overall pick to land Raiders forward Matteo Gennaro.

Gennaro finished the season strong with five goals and eight points in his last nine games, and 25 points in his last 32 games. But that surge came after Gennaro managed to get just six points in his opening 40 games.

Gennaro joins former Raider teammate Josh Morrissey in the Jets prospect pool. While he was still a member of the Raiders, Morrissey was selected 13th overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
