Northern evacuees make stop in Prince Albert before going on to Cold Lake, Alta.

As evacuees from nothern Saskatchewan move to safety, new evacuation centres are opening up.

New evacuees coming into Prince Albert are being told to go to the Margo Fournier Centre located at 1211 1st Ave. West to check in.

Lise Anne Pierce, the provincial manager for Red Cross disaster managment is helping to run the Centre.

She said those who registered in La Ronge before leaving were told to go to Saskatoon where more shelters are being set up. Now, they’re being sent to Cold Lake, Alta.

Evacuees stopping in Prince Albert are doing so because they need food or gas vouchers to take with them.

So far the situation is managable, according to Pierce, as they have enough volunteers at this time. People in the city are not being asked to open their homes.

One city resident even walked into the center to offer up their home, in which Pierce politely declined, as centers are being set up in Saskatoon.

She said Prince Albert is at capacity with 300 people between two shelters, 450 in hotels and 1,200 have been taken in by family and friends.

Pierce said she wants to thank all the Red Cross volunteers, social workers and others for helping.

To date, just over 12,000 people will be evacuated from northern Saskatchewan.
