SK Government Fire Update – July 16 – Important Evacuee Information

Jul 16, 2015 | 5:16 PM

127 active wildfires currently. Rain has helped in some areas and the weather outlook for the next few days is positive with more rain expected. That allows crews to move from a defensive approach to begin working offensively, pushing fires further away from communities.

La Ronge, Air Ronge, Lac La Ronge Indian Band and surrounding communities are still under a direct fire threat.

Threat assessments are determined by the local area fire managers and considers the chance of fire jumping fire guards, the number and location of hot spots, fire risk to community infrastructure and more.

The army and ground crews with heavy helicopter support are monitoring hot spots and securing fire perimeters in the La Ronge area today. Work continues to protect the Stanley Mission Church from the Cog fire. Multiple ground crews, aircraft and heavy equipment continue to reduce threats from the Philion fire along Weyakwin River.

For more specific fire info, visit: http://www.environment.gov.sk.ca/fire or call the Wildfire Client Service Office at 1-800-567-4224.

JUST ANNOUNCED: Evacuees living in a Saskatchewan Housing Corporation-owned property will get a free month of rent. For more info: http://www.saskatchewan.ca/…/saskatchewan-housing-corporati…

Repatriation efforts are ongoing. The number of people under the care of Emergency Social Services has dropped under 10,000 as residents of Pinehouse, La Loche, Dillon, Montreal Lake, Ramsey Bay, Timber Bay, Weyakwin and others are beginning to return home. Some evacuation orders are only lifted for non-health priority individuals.

If you have questions about evacuation orders, call your local authority or the Red Cross Inquiry Line for evacuees or family members of evacuees: 1-888-953-3463. Multiple levels of government and volunteers are working well together to coordinate transportation and ensuring an orderly and safe return to communities.

Remember, in order for an evacuation to be fully lifted, a number of criteria must be met: no wildfire/smoke risk to community, medical services available, safe water, power, telephone, sewer, gas, 911 service and local authority present. For more info on the criteria, see our recent post: https://www.facebook.com/SKGov/videos/1017975908220810/

Most of Saskatchewan’s Provincial Parks are open. There are some closures in the north and fire bans to note but many are out enjoying our beautiful parks. For more info: www.saskparks.net
