Raiders’ Moe named on Alberta U16 shortlist

Jul 22, 2015 | 7:35 AM

Spencer Moe is having himself an unforgettable offseason.

It all started May 7, when the Raiders drafted the 5’5 Calgarian in the second round, 28th overall in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. He later signed a WHL standard player contract with the Raiders on July 8.

Then on July 21, Hockey Alberta announced that Moe made their Under-16 team shortlist, making him a key prospect for the Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup, Oct. 27 to Nov. 1.

“It’s just been a great experience,” said Moe. “I knew this was a big year for me so I pushed it up a notch for this year.”

The development camp was July 7-12 in Camrose, Alta. where Moe played with fellow Raiders draft picks Tyler Lowe (third round, 64th overall) and Chase Felgueiras (sixth round, 116th overall). He now finds himself on the short list with the likes of Ty Smith, the first overall pick in the 2015 draft, and other highly-touted prospects from Alberta.

To impress at development camp and get one step closer to the Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup has been a good step so far.

“It was amazing,” said Moe. “There were a lot of great guys and a lot of great players. It was tough but I got through it.

“I’m one more step to being a better hockey player and achieving better goals.”

Moe demanded more of himself for his second year of bantam, knowing all the WHL scouts would be watching. He was inspired by Calgary Bison Bantam AAA alumnus Kyle Olson, who was a standout on the 2013-2014 Bisons when Moe was a first-year.

Olson was named an Alberta Cup All-Star and won the MVP, Top Forward and Top Scorer awards in his division and was drafted in the third round by the Tri-City Americans in 2014 while Moe was in his first year of bantam.

Moe said he watched learned a lot from playing with Olson and implemented some of those lessons into his own game.

“I’d watch him a lot and try to base my games off him because he’s an outstanding player,” said Moe, who had 31 goals and 52 points in 27 games with the Bisons this past season. “This year, I tried doing the same as him—stepping it up, being a great leader, great role model and playing really well.

“That’s what I tried to do and my teammates helped me through that. I believe that’s what got me to where I am now.”

After signing with the Raiders, he became the third Raider in the 2015 draft class to do so behind Cole Fonstad (fifth overall) and Carson Miller (20th overall).

“They’re great players. I’m looking really forward to playing with them and getting to know them better,” said Moe, who’s played spring hockey against them. “The Raiders have a bright future and hopefully, later in the years, I’ll be with the Raiders. I know for sure they will be, too.”

Unlike Moe, Fonstad and Miller haven’t gone through their U16 development camp yet. Team Saskatchewan’s camp is set for July 27-31.

Raiders prospects in Lane Kirk (fifth round, 97 overall) and Justin Nachbaur (seventh round, 142nd overall) have already gone through Team Manitoba’s Program of Excellence Top-40 camp in May.

The 2015 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup will be held in Calgary Oct. 27 to Nov. 1.
