Local Talent to Entertain at The Northern Lights Bluegrass and Old Tyme Music Festival

Jul 31, 2015 | 11:59 AM

August 14-16, The Northern Lights Bluegrass and Old Tyme Music Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary at the Ness Creek Site! It has been an amazing decade of music with so much talent from around North America and from right here at home.

This year we are putting a heavy focus on some of our favorite local acts and what better way to showcase Saskatchewan talent than to have Dallas and Phil Boyer playing for the Northern Prairie Dancers!?

The Northern Prairie Dancers are a group of young Aboriginal dancers from the Prince Albert area.  Their dance is very high energy, participatory and they receive standing ovations wherever they go. It takes a lot of dedication and commitment to showcase these marvelous dancing skills. These young people are hard working, independent and have earned the money required to travel all over the western provinces. They have given back to their community by dancing for the senior homes in and around Prince Albert.

Dallas and Phil Boyer are an energetic father and son duo from Saskatoon who have been entertaining crowds for many years. Dallas plays traditional Metis and old time fiddle while his dad, Phil Boyer, accompanies him on guitar. Dallas has had many highlights during his career, which includes the 2010 Olympics and opening for Michelle Wright at the Back to Batoche Festival. At such a young age he already has many awards under his belt and two CDs out.

The Northern Lights Bluegrass and Old Tyme Music Society work hard to promote our Prairie Heritage music through our camp, festival and various events throughout the year. In January we host a camp and old time tour called Shivering Strings. During this event we travel across the province and play our traditional prairie music in schools and teach the dances and music to the next generations. We have been so lucky to be able to do this and also to meet some of Saskatchewan’s finest purveyors of this music – like The Northern Prairie Dancers and Dallas and Phil Boyer.
One thing we have seen time and time again at our festival is the love of dance and the love of fiddle. The two together seem like the perfect way to celebrate 10 years of music in northern Saskatchewan! So come on out Aug 14th – 16th, 2015 and bring your dancing shoes!
