Brother and sister duo ready to take on the Western Canada Games

Aug 7, 2015 | 6:38 AM

After sharing the track and training together all their lives, the Lehner siblings will get to do it again at one of the biggest competitions in the nation.

Katelyn, 20, and Karson, 17, will be competing at the 2015 Western Canada Games in Wood Buffalo – their first time representing Saskatchewan at the Western Canada Games and the first time they have competed together since Katelyn’s high school days.

“We know how the other trains, how we are and how we react on the competition days. It will be kind of good to have that extra support. It will just relax us both a little bit more too,” said Katelyn.

Katelyn currently resides in Calgary as she pursues a degree in Kinesiology with the University of Calgary. She arrived in Saskatoon on Wednesday and will come home to Prince Albert before heading to Wood Buffalo with Karson on Thursday.

“I’m super excited that he’s made the team. He’s had a super successful year right now so it’ll be exciting to see what he can do,” she said.

Katelyn will be competing in the heptathlon at the Summer Games – an event that spans two days and includes the 100 meter hurdle, high jump, shotput, javelin, long jump, and the 200 and 800 meter sprint.

“It keeps practicing really fun,” she said, laughing. “I think I’d get bored if I was only training for one event. It’s fun to have to switch it up a little bit. You’re able to do hurdles, then javelin the next day and high jump the other day. It’s fun.”

Katelyn placed sixth in the heptathlon at the 2013 Pan. American Games in Columbia. In the points-based event, Katelyn’s personal best is 4926 points – a mark that she wants to break this weekend.

“I’m really hoping for a personal best score. I feel like that has been on my mind for the last little bit. I’ve inched it a little bit but I know that I’m capable of a good little jump up,” she said.

Katelyn will also be competing in the 100 meter hurdles and long jump events over the weekend.

It’s a great thing for Karson to have his big sister at this meet, he said.

“It’s definitely a cool feeling. We have not competed on the same track team for some time, so everybody is looking forward to it and looking forward to the competition.”

Karson will be competing in the 200 meter sprint, an event he has had great success with in his young career. The St.Mary’s senior received a gold medal at this year’s provincial games setting Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association records in both the 100 and 200 meter races.

“I’m definitely a little bit nervous. It’s one of the bigger meets that you’re going to go to, but you have to try to enjoy it to your fullest and be proud of yourself for being able to compete at that level and just ride it out as it goes along,” Karson said.

The duo will also each be running their respective 4 x 100 meter relay race.

The 2015 Western Canada Summer Games will hold events in 18 different sports bringing in over 2500 athletes together from Canada’s four western provinces and the three northern territories. The games will be held from August 7 – 16.
