‘Will you marry this millionaire?’ La Ronge lotto winner proposes after winning $14M

A couple from La Ronge has won $14.2 million dollars after buying the winning Lotto 649 ticket in Saskatchewan.

Rod Holinaty and Verna Tremblay won the Aug. 5 draw. They officially received their cheque at a presentation in Saskatoon on Friday.

Holinaty proposed to Tremblay after finding out he had the winning ticket.

“Will you marry this millionaire?” he asked.

The couple plans to travel but have not decided on a destination yet.

Holinaty bought the winning ticket at the Country North Shell in La Ronge. The ticket was a $14 quick pick.

Corinne Lazurko works at the store and may have been the one to sell Holinaty the winning ticket. Lazurko is well acquainted with Holinaty’s routine.

“He’ll purchase a Lotto 649 ticket for two draws because he works at one of the mines, I think, and he buys a Lotto Max as well,” she said.

Lazurko said the store has sold winning tickets in the past. Many years ago a ticket bought at the store was worth $4.5 million.  Lazurko said they have also had many $50,000 and $75,000 winners.
