Gardiner snipes winner as Raiders pump Pats 5-2

Reid Gardiner returned from the young prospects NHL tournament to score the winner as the Prince Albert Raiders beat the Pats 5-2 in Regina to pick up their first win of the 2105 preseason.

The 19-year-old from Humboldt who also scored for the Vancouver Canuck rookies during the Penticton tournament, sniped a slow snap shot from the slot during a 4-on-4 situation with about 9 minutes remaining in the third period.

The shot sparked a three unanswered goal outburst in the final frame with Jordan Tkatch adding a power play goal and Austin Glover icing the game with an empty netter with just over a minute remaining. He outraced everyone to the puck in the Pats zone during a Regina power play, making it a shorthanded-empty net marker.

Dylan Williamson would open the scoring around 8 minutes into the second period with a highlight reel backhander over the shoulder of Pats veteran netminder Daniel Wapple. Thomas Lenchyshyn who assisted on the goal would also throw one of the biggest bodychecks of the night on speedy Sam Steel. Dalton Yorke and Parker Kelly also threw big body checks for the winners.

However the Pats got back to back goals from Rykr Cole and Gary Hagen to take the lead. Hagen made up for the wide open net he missed from close range late in the first period.

The Raiders would tie the game with just over two minutes left in the middle frame when Tim Vanstone deflected a power play point shot. The 19-year-old ‘s power move to the net also set up Tkatch’s power play goal which provided some late third period insurance.

Ryan Parenteau went the distance in goal making 27 saves while Wapple stopped 23 of 27 Prince Albert shots.

The Raiders were 2-2 on the power play while killing off all 7 Regina advantages  The game also marked the return of overage defesneman Jesse Lees who suffered an upper body injury during the first game of main training camp.

Goalie Nick McBride, Defensemen Brendan Guhle and Hunter Warner and Centreman Matteo Genaro are still at their NHL rookie training camps. McBride and Gennaro are expected back soon while Guhle as been invited to Buffalo Sabres main camp and Warner is expected to get the same invitation from the Minnesota Wild.

The Raiders are now 1-4 in preseason play heading into Friday’s final exhibition game against the Pats at the Art Hauser Centre. You can hear that game on 900 CKBI at 7pm
