Zombies to invade downtown P.A. for good cause

Oct 20, 2015 | 11:44 AM

Downtown Prince Albert will be crawling with zombies on the evening of Oct. 22, but there will be no need to panic.

Family Futures is hosting their 3rd Annual Family Zombie Walk.

The walk begins at 6 p.m. at the Historical Museum on Central Avenue and River Street.

Jolene Forster, an outreach worker with Family Futures, says the walk will start and end at the museum and go throughout the downtown area.

Forster said the walk has become more popular since it first took place three years ago and credits the rise in participation to the zombie craze.

“There seems to be a lure to zombies and dressing as the undead,” said Forster. “Last year we had about 100 people, the first year not many.

“There are lots of people talking about it and wanting to come, and talking about how they are going to dress up.”

But the walk isn’t just about dressing as the walking dead, it’s a chance for Family Futures to raise funds.

“We are also collecting a silver collection for our Christmas Hampers that we give to participants that don’t necessarily get from other places,” said Forster. “We like to make sure all our kids have something to open on Christmas morning.”

Forster said there is no cost to taking part in the walk, but she says they are encouraging people to bring something, however small, for the silver collection.

“The need for hampers is getting greater every year and it may be due to the economy. There are so many people that don’t fit in the poverty line but they aren’t well off either and they go without. So those are the people we’re trying to help,” she explained.

“We do this to have fun, and have something safe downtown for Halloween and of course raise money for our Christmas Hampers. It’s so much fun to come out and see everyone.”
