Slowing down Point will be a tough task for Raiders

Oct 23, 2015 | 6:30 AM

The Prince Albert Raiders’ four-game winning streak will be on the line Friday at the Art Hauser Centre when they take on the Moose Jaw Warriors in the Raiders’ Pink in the Rink night.

The top priority for the Raiders to keep that streak alive will be to shut down Brayden Point—much easier said than done.

The 19-year-old that has already medalled three times for Team Canada, including a gold medal in the 2015 Under-20 World Juniors. Point leads the WHL in scoring with 22 points in eight games this year and recently became third on the Warriors all-time scoring list.

Like for so many teams, Point has especially been a problem for the Raiders throughout his career. In 24 career games against the Raiders, Point has scored 16 goals and 39 points. He had 12 points against the Raiders in six head-to-head games last season.

“I think with Point, he’s a very smart, intelligent player that finds space—we have to limit that,” said Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid. “The other thing is talented players love being on the power play, so we can’t give them free power play chances. There will probably be power plays for them, but they have to be [after] good penalties.

“We have to play a good game. They’ve got not only Point, but they have some other players, too. It should be a good game with two good teams. We want to see what we got and keep rolling.”

It will be a battle of two teams off to great starts. The Raiders have an 8-2-0-1 record to start the year—the only other team in the WHL with eight wins are the Red Deer Rebels. They’re also on a four-game winning streak. The Warriors are 7-1-1-1, winning all of their last three games including a 6-1 drubbing Wednesday against the Swift Current Broncos.

Both teams are also on the CHL Top 10 lists, the Warriors in sixth place while the Raiders made the list this week at 10th.

“It should be a good game. They’re playing real well, they’re ranked sixth in the country for a reason and Brayden Point is a world-class player. He’s having a great start. I think the winner will be the fans [Friday].”

The Raiders will be busy, playing five games in an eight-game span, starting on Friday with the Pink in the Rink game against the Warriors.

The Raiders are then in Regina Sunday to play the Pats, before hosting the Edmonton Oil Kings on Wednesday, the Victoria Royals on Friday and the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday.
