Inclusive Education

Oct 26, 2015 | 8:15 AM

The SK Association for Community Living would like to invite you to attend an evening to discuss strategies that families can use to prepare themselves before approaching a school to request a more inclusive environment for their child.

Facilitated by Dr. Gordon Porter, Director of Inclusive Education, we will strategize together on how to communicate with teachers, superintendents, and principals.

Inclusive education means that all students attend and are welcomed by their neighborhood schools in age-appropriate, regular classes and are supported to learn, contribute and participate in all aspects of the life of the school.

Inclusive education is about how we develop and design our schools, classrooms, programs and activities so that all students learn and participate together. Unfortunately, there are many schools and communities today that use a model of education that excludes and isolates children with intellectual disabilities or learning challenges. Thus, inclusive education becomes asked about, advocated for, negotiated or worse yet, denied.

Parents who want their children to receive an inclusive education in schools that do not practice inclusion need to be well prepared before approaching the school with their request. They cannot assume that teachers and administrators have all the information and if they do the correct information.

Families also need to keep in mind that schools are guided by the direction of the school district. So, even if a school would like to become more inclusive, funding and support from the district may not be available. In any case, inclusion is worth asking for.

Dr. Gordon Porter is a past president of CACL, NBACL and Inclusion Inter-Americana. He has been a teacher, principal and district administrator and has more than 30 years’ experience with inclusive education. He has co-edited two books on inclusive education, most recently, Exploring Inclusive Educational Practice Through Professional Inquiry in 2011. He has written many articles and commentaries and delivered training sessions and talks throughout the USA and Canada and in more than 40 countries, most recently in Colombia, Germany, Spain and South Africa.

In 2009 he received a Doctor Honorus Causa from the National Pedagogical University of Peru for his work on inclusive education in that country and UNESCO recognized his work on inclusive education in New Brunswick with the 2013 UNESCO/Emir Jaber al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah Prize. Dr. Porter has been a consultant to the UN Human Rights Committee, the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank and is currently an advisor and consultant to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Employment of the Northwest Territories on inclusive education policy and programs.

He was the recipient of the Canadian Education Association’s – Whitworth Award for Research in Education – 2007 and former chair of the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission. Gordon Porter was named to the Order of Canada in 2010 and to the Order of New Brunswick in 2013.
