Gardiner talks about ‘honour’ of Super Series addition

Reid Gardiner was initially overlooked when Team WHL was being assembled for the 2015 Canada Russia Series.

But Gardiner made it impossible to get ignored a second time, as he went on a three-game, five-point scoring streak since Team WHL was initially announced on Oct. 19 and is now tied for the WHL lead in  scoring with 24 points in 14 games.

On Thursday, Team WHL added Gardiner to their list as a late call-up to the squad for the Nov. 9 game in Kelowna, B.C., and Nov. 10 in Kamloops, B.C. He’ll join Raiders defenceman Brendan Guhle, who made the initial roster.

“To get a chance to play for the league here, it’s a huge honour,” said Gardiner. “To get to play against the Russians on TV is pretty cool. Obviously, it’s disappointing to not be named the first time around, but to be added like I did this past week is pretty cool.

“My family and I are really excited for the opportunity.”

Gardiner was named to the team to replace Kelowna Rockets forward Rourke Chartier, who will miss the game due to an upper body injury.

Gardiner and Chartier know each other well, as both were teammates for the 2011-2012 Saskatoon Contacts. That year, the Contacts won the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League championship and third in the 2012 Telus Cup.

“I feel bad for him. He’s a good player and he deserved to be there,” said Gardiner.

Gardiner was named the WHL Player of the Week in the second week of the season Sept. 28- Oct. 4. He scored three goals and five points in three games in that time to earn him the honours.

Of the 14 games Gardiner has played, he’s only been held scoreless twice.

Simon Stransky has had as good of a view of Gardiner’s play to start the year, playing alongside Gardiner on the top line.

“It’s a pleasure to play with him, because he’s a great player,” said Stransky. “I’m glad for him to be named to the WHL Super Series [team].”

Stransky hasn’t been a slouch either. To start his sophomore season, Stransky is tied for 10th in the WHL scoring race with 21 points in 14 games. He has 14 assists and seven goals—six of which have been on the power play.

Stransky credits Gardiner, as well as their centre Austin Glover, for the success he has had offensively to start the year.

“I think it’s because I’m playing with Austin Glover and Reid Gardiner,” said Stransky. “It’s great to play with them. It’s because of them I have 21 points.”

The Raiders are currently on a seven-game winning streak, the longest streak they’ve had since the beginning of the 2012-2013 season. They’re about almost halfway to tying the franchise record, as the Raiders won 15 straight games in the 1985-1986 season.

“It’s great. A seven-game win streak is actually impressive for us,” said Stransky. “We have to keep going and keep working hard.”

The Raiders will carry that streak into two games this weekend, Friday against the Victoria Royals (8-5-0-1) and Saturday against the Swift Current Broncos (5-6-2).
