Sentencing hearing to begin for man guilty in orange zone death
A judge in Weyburn is scheduled to begin hearing sentencing submissions for the man who hit and killed an 18-year-old flag worker along Highway 39 over three years ago.
Keith Dunford was recently found guilty of dangerous driving causing death. Ashley Richards died in a construction zone near Midale in August 2012. It was just her second day on the job, although it was her first actually working as a flag person.
Dunford was also charged with criminal negligence causing death. He was found not guilty on that count.
Dunford’s lawyer Aaron Fox has said this is an unusual case considering his client doesn’t have a previous criminal record and alcohol wasn’t involved in the crash. However, Fox said since somebody died in the incident, jail time is likely.
