Breaking the bank in the spirit of Halloween

Oct 30, 2015 | 4:47 PM

Halloween is only one night away and people are shelling out cash to be decked out in eye-catching duds.

Melody Smallchild, a cashier at Halloween Alley in Prince Albert, said the season has been a whirlwind at the store.

“It’s super busy this year because Spirit Halloween isn’t across to compete with us so we’ve been getting all the sales and everyday has been just super crazy,” said Smallchild.

She says she’s definitely seen some trends when it comes to costume selections this year.

“Minecraft was big,” said Smallchild. “The super heroes are all sold out, as usual, like every year. And zombies, because of the Zombie Walk.”

As far as adult costumes go, super heroes are still popular as well as what Smallchild calls “crazy costumes,” most being spoofs and jokes.

Costumers will spend anywhere from $150-$200 on a fully decked out ensemble, she said.

“It’s just gotten bigger and bigger, and more expensive,” said Smallchild.

While she said some parents are apprehensive to spend the money, it usually can’t be helped.

“They mostly want to satisfy their kids, but when they hear the total they’re like (shocked),” she said. “They pull out their bank card with a big sigh.”

They’ve also had big families, and costumers from northern Saskatchewan buying as many costumes as they can.

“They come and buy in bulk and go back home,” said Smallchild. “It’s really expensive but they seem happy with their choices.”

Smallchild said they’re expecting a rush leading up to Halloween parties and trick-or-treating. The store will be open until 11 p.m. on Friday and again early Saturday morning.

So far, they’ve sold over 100 tickets to the Halloween EXorcist, with organizers selling another 200 tickets.
