Safety important when celebrating Halloween

Halloween is meant to be fun but there are still a few safety precautions people should take to ensure fun doesn’t turn into tragedy.

Lyle Karasiuk, director of public affairs with Parkland Ambulance, wants to make sure people of all ages stay safe.

“The easiest way to remember with what to do about your costume is….make it bright, make it light and be sure that you can wear it over top of something,” said Karasiuk.

Karasiuk advises any trick or treaters out after dark to also make sure they are carrying a flashlight.

He also asks parents to use face paint for their children’s costumes instead of an awkward Halloween mask.

“We encourage moms and dads to get face paint out but if you do wear a face mask ensure that you can see well, hear well and it doesn’t fall off and it is easy for you to get on and off,” he said.

Kids are not the only ones who should be careful this Halloween.

Adults should also make sure they keep safe. Karasiuk said any adults out and about Saturday night should make sure they think ahead, and plan a safe arrival and ride home if they are attending a Halloween party.

“If you are going to be engaging in some alcoholic beverages at either a house party or one of our local establishments, plan an arrival,” said Karasiuk.

“It’s so easy to call a cab, have a ride, get a designated driver or have a friend come pick you up. It’s a lot safer than trying to navigate home, which is not the way to do it, since you run the risk of being stopped by police. Or worse our paramedics could be your next ride.”

Home owners should also make a few precautions to help prepare for trick or treaters.

Karasiuk said it’s important to make sure all Halloween decorations set up outside the home are a safe distance away from walkways and stairs, to avoid a tripping hazard.

“It’s a busy time, lots of doorbell ringing and up and down those stairs, so keep your staircase clear,” he said. “And make sure if you do have pets at home you put them away so they don’t go out there and get startled…by the ghost and goblins that are visiting you.”
