Broncos’ Martin sinks Raiders with natural hat trick

After two flat performances this weekend, the Prince Albert Raiders find themselves with back-to-back defeats. They lost 4-2 to the Swift Current Broncos on Halloween Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre, a day after they were beat by the Victoria Royals 3-2 in overtime in a game they were outshot 49-24.

The loss snaps the Raiders’ eight-game point streak of 7-0-0-1 and caps off a flat weekend.

“It’s probably good that we lost. If we won, it would probably be the wrong message,” said Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid. “It’s disappointing. It’s the first game I can probably say this year that I’m disappointed.

“The big thing is to learn from it. I thought we might have learned from last night, but we didn’t. Hopefully we’ll learn from tonight.”

Things looked pretty good for the Raiders after the first period. They led 2-0 with goals from Sean Montgomery and Dalton Yorke. They also chased Broncos goaltender Landon Bow from the game, who surrendered two goals on 15 shots.

But it all imploded from there. The Broncos’ got on the board and all the momentum of the game when Glenn Gawdin scored 1:20 into the second period.

Then the Jon Martin show began. He scored a natural hat trick in the second period within a 7:42 span to give the Broncos a 4-2 lead heading into the third period.

“We were kind of full of ourselves and got our lunch fed to us,” said Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid. “You know what, we didn’t heed the warning from last night. We took it on the chin tonight.

“We like our group, it’s a good bunch of guys, but it just goes to show you that if you don’t play as a team, you’re not going to be successful. I thought we played like a bunch of individuals tonight.”

Martin now leads the WHL in goals with 16 through 15 games. He also added an assist. Jake DeBrusk assisted on all four of the Broncos goals.

Parenteau made 30 saves on 34 shots for the Raiders. Travis Child stopped all 23 shots he faced in relief in the final 40 minutes for the victory. Bow made 13 saves on 15 shots in the first before he gave way to Child.

Nachbaur, Kirk with chance at Challenge Cup gold

Team Manitoba beat Team B.C. 4-2 in the semifinals of the WHL U16 Challenge Cup Saturday in Calgary, to advance to the gold medal game.

Raider prospects Justin Nachbaur and Lane Kirk each picked up an assist in the victory. They’ll play fellow Raiders pick Spencer Moe and Team Alberta in the finals on Sunday for the top prize.

Team Saskatchewan, featuring Raiders first rounders Cole Fonstad and Carson Miller, as well as Prince Albert Mintos Jake Davidson and Layne Matechuk, will be in the bronze medal game, taking on B.C.

Davidson enters the medal round with a .915 save percentage and 2.44 goals against average, second among goaltenders in the tournament in both categories.

Home sweet home

The Raiders will wrap up their five-game home stand with two more games this week at the Art Hauser Centre, Wednesday against the Calgary Hitmen and Friday against the Red Deer Rebels.
