‘Big Dig’ ready by Monday afternoon

Nov 2, 2015 | 9:35 AM

If all things go according to plan, the ‘Big Dig’ will be a thing of the past by 1 p.m. on Monday.

Crews are currently working on clearing the road of traffic barricades to allow traffic to finally flow down 2nd Ave. in all lanes.

“It’s been a long process but at the end of the day we did it right,” Mayor Greg Dionne said. “We don’t have to go back and do it again, all the tracks are fixed, all the hurdles we had are fixed so we’re going to move forward.”

Road surface marking still is yet to be completed.

In addition, more work will done in the spring in the way of paving and cement guides around traffic lights, according to Dionne.

Despite the original completion date being set for early September, construction has taken over five months to complete.

Work delays were caused by uncooperative weather conditions and unexpected issues, particularly with work under the train tracks.

“The work had to be done,” Dionne reiterated. “I do appreciate the patience but lots of people have phoned and said they understand. Now it’s done and hopefully it lasts another 100 years and we don’t have to worry about it.”
