P.A. and area prepares to remember

Nov 10, 2015 | 4:00 PM

Canadians across the country will be remembering our veterans this Wednesday.

Local Royal Canadian Legion branches will be celebrating Remembrance Day with a number of ceremonies around the region.

Wreaths will be laid at armories and cemeteries to mark the day.

In Prince Albert, the legion will host their ceremony at the P.A. Armoury Building on the Exhibition grounds.

The ceremony will start at 10:30 a.m. with the parade of veterans, with a gathering at the Legion Hall afterwards.

The Prince Albert Historical Museum will be open on Wednesday from 1-4 p.m.

Tim Panas with the museum said they’ll host a Remembrance Day event.

“Our galleries will be open with the natural emphasis on the military history of Prince Albert,” said Panas. “So our military displays will be available as well as the video’s we’ve had as part of our World War One exhibit that we had up last year.”

He said the museum is hoping to have some veterans come in for the special day, along with local cadets.

“We’re looking at people from the Prince Albert community who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces, talking about their own experiences within the military, just let people know exactly what it is people involved in the industry goes through as part of service to this country,” said Panas.

Admission to the museum on Wednesday will be free.

“It’s a nice way to spend the afternoon after all of the commemoration ceremonies take place in the morning,” Panas said.

Prince Albert’s Messiah Lutheran Church, located at 1796 15th Ave. E., is having a Remembrance Day fall supper from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Supper for adults will be $15, $7 for kids aged six to 12 and free for kids five and under.

Remembering around the region

In Melfort, there will be a ceremony held at the MUCC High School at 10:30.

“We have a march on of veterans and Legionaries in uniform. RCMP and cadets will carry the banners and flags,” said Bob Ellis, president of the Melfort Legion. “We read off the names of all the fallen in this area.”

There will be a community band playing hymns, and Ellis said they will be laying a wreath at the cenotaph in Melfort.

In Shellbrook, there will be a service at 10:30 a.m. at the Shellbrook Theatre with a lunch afterwards for everyone to attend at the Legion Hall.

There are arrangements being made in Shellbrook to bring Second World War veterans currently in local health care facilities to both functions.

MP Randy Hoback and MLA Scott Moe are expected to be at the ceremony.

In northern Saskatchewan, a Remembrance Day ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the Kikinatik Hall in La Ronge.
