Coleman inspired for Movember; leads Raiders in donations

Nov 12, 2015 | 5:25 AM

Luke Coleman is raising money for Movember this year, with inspiration that “really hits home” to him.

That comes from his uncle Clifford, who Coleman says has won three successful battles against brain tumours.

Although Movember actively raises money and awareness for other types of cancer and conditions, Coleman was nevertheless motivated to help out the Raiders’ Movember initiative.

“It’s a great cause to do,” said Coleman. “My goal is for $1,000, hopefully I can get there. It’s good to be a part of it, knowing it’s for a good cause and just knowing that you’re doing something good for someone else.”

The Raiders have raised $430 so far, and Coleman accounts for $320 of it himself.

The donator that’s currently in second is Coleman’s roommate Brennan Riddle, who has $60 so far and is keen on competing with Coleman.

On Riddle’s Movember profile, the first thing he put under the ‘My Motivation’ section was that he wanted “to grow a nicer moustache than Luke Coleman.”

“It’s going pretty good. I think he might beat me in the beard department, but his upper lip is about the age of a three-year-old’s,” said Riddle. “When he wakes up, he’s probably at the mirror looking for a few more hairs. I think we’re all doing the same thing, trying to scrounge up the best moustache we can.

“It’s a good time. Everyone likes to have a little contest between teammates to see who grows the best moustache,” added Riddle. “It’s also good to raise awareness and raise money for a good cause.

Coleman did have a retort, alleging that Riddle using moustache performance enhancing products and isn’t sure if his was completely legal.

“We live together at home. He always has his moustache going, but it doesn’t grow on the bottom of his lip, so I don’t know if it qualifies,” smiled Coleman. “It just goes on the top, right under his nose. It’s not really good, it’s the only thing he can grow. He’s got it dyed, so everyone can see it.”

The Raiders official Movember donation page is located here, with all the players that are actively participating.

Best Mo’s on the Raiders

Coleman: “Cal Babych. He always has a beard going whether he’s shaved or not. It just grows back.”

Riddle: “I think [Hunter] Warner has the best right now.”

Worst Mo’s on the Raiders

Coleman: “It’s got to be Parker Kelly. He’s a little hairless cat, can’t really grow anything.”

Riddle: “[Coleman] or [Matteo] Gennaro I think; they’re both struggling.”

Duo of Raiders helping in both of Team WHL’s wins

Team WHL won both of their games against Team Russia in the opening two games of the CHL Canada Russia Series, 7-3 on Nov. 9 in Kelowna and 4-2 Nov. 10 in Kamloops.

A duo of Raiders, forward Reid Gardiner and defenceman Brendan Guhle, played in both of the games.

Gardiner had two assists, one in each contest, and Guhle went scoreless, +1 on the blueline.

More homers

The Raiders will take on the Saskatoon Blades on Friday at the Art Hauser Centre for their next home game. After an away contest in Brandon to take on the Wheat Kings Sunday, the Raiders will have four more home games: Nov. 17 against the Moose Jaw Warriors, Nov. 21 against the Regina Pats, Nov. 24 against the Calgary Hitmen and Nov. 27 against the Edmonton Oil Kings.

The Raiders will be accepting Movember donations at their Nov. 27 home game.
