Local breeders hope for best in show

Prince Albert has gone to the dogs.

Hundreds of dogs are being prepped and groomed to compete during the Prince Albert Kennel and Obedience Club’s annual dog show this weekend.

The dog show began Friday and continues until Sunday Nov. 22.

Liana Maloney, local dog breeder and show co-ordinator for the Prince Albert Kennel Club, said the grooming process is the most vital part of getting your dog ready to show.  She said it is all about enhancing the dog’s natural features.

“It’s pride in what you have, the same in how we dress,” Maloney said. “So when you come here it seems like a beauty pageant and there is a lot of make-up, but what we are doing is underneath all of this grooming we’re enhancing all of the features that the dog has already naturally.”

Maloney breeds and shows shetland sheepdogs, and has been competing in dog shows for over 32 years. Last year one of her sheltie’s, Coastal View Sincerely Bijou, won the Canadian Championship title for best sheltie in Canada.

Shetland sheepdogs can be a tough breed of dog to groom and prep before competing. Maloney said it can take up to an hour-and-a-half to properly prepare a sheltie before they are ready to compete and present to a judge.

“With shelties they have a lot of coat so there is a lot of product involved,” she said. “Shelties are known as the back combing queens; we can back comb anything. Defy gravity you know, the higher the hair the closer to god with a sheltie,” she said jokingly.

The owners and handlers attending this weekend’s dog show are working towards gaining a Canadian Championship title. The dogs are evaluated according to Canadian Kennel Club standards.

Visitors are welcome to stop by the Armoury at the Prince Albert exhibition grounds to check out the dog show. There is an admission of three dollars for adults and two dollars for children.

The doors open at 9 a.m.  and the show continues until 5 p.m.
