Local organization hands out scholarship

A Prince Albert University student has been awarded a special scholarship.

Jerri Frantik, who is wrapping up her masters degree in Indigenous Social Work at First Nation’s University, was given the Canadian Federation of University Women Prince Albert Club’s Centennial Scholarship, which is being handed out to help mark the national organization’s 100^th anniversary.

Frantik said the $1,000 award is truly meaningful.

“I am just so grateful for this, I really am. It meant a lot to me that I was selected,” she said. “I want to be able to teach my daughter that this is what women can do and that it’s very empowering.”

Before going to school for Indigenous Social Work, Frantik worked as a massage therapist. Going into the future she is looking to continue working with communities in the North, which she has been doing while working on her degree.

In total, the P.A. branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women received 19 applications for the centennial scholarship award. In order to qualify, applicants had to be 25 years or older, attending or accepted to attend a post-secondary institution when applying and had to live in P.A. or the surrounding area.

Dalelene Yelland, the president of the local organization, said the women who her organization supports tend to go on and do well.

“The people that have been able to pick up the scholarships often become leaders in their own professions, because they have a lot of enthusiasm, I think for education,” she said.

While the national organization is marking its 100^th anniversary, the chapter in P.A. is 88 years old. The organization awards scholarships on a yearly basis to graduating high school students who are looking to continue their education. Yelland said they are able to provide their regular scholarships thanks to support they receive from their community when they put on their fundraising book sale.

“It’s huge. We couldn’t possibly contribute the monies back to the community if the community themselves were not supporting us in what we do,” she said.
