City sends a message after handicap parking blitz

Jul 8, 2012 | 11:57 AM

Prince Albert bylaw officers recently held a handicap parking blitz.

The blitz resulted in 10 vehicles being issued tickets for being parked in a handicap stall without the proper permit.

“Handicapped parking stalls are reserved for those who need them most,” Prince Albert Mayor Jim Scarrow said in a release. “If you’re able bodied, you created a significant disadvantage to a person with a disability by taking up a spot that would otherwise be vacant.”

Suzanne Stubbs is the acting bylaw manager for Prince Albert, she said the city wanted to do something to help bring awareness to the issue, and that’s where the blitz came in.

“We just wanted to make people aware that they need to avoid parking in the handicapped stalls if they don’t have the proper tag.”

“We thought … we’d do the handicap blitz to get people aware to parking in the locations they should park in’. Handicap parking is meant for people with permits, and they’re there for a reason,” Stubbs said.

City council had made changes to the handicap parking bylaw in recent years, and it included an increase in fines.

If you pay the ticket within 10 days, it’s $150 fine and if it’s after the initial 10 days, it increases to $300.

“Handicap parking violations have been a concern of Prince Albert City Council for some time. Targeted efforts like this, while not desirable, do help deliver the message that this activity comes with consequences,” Mayor Scarrow said in the release.

“Handicapped parking violations are certainly an ongoing issue in Prince Albert, we’re asking people to think twice before they park in these stalls or they risk a somewhat hefty fine,” Stubbs said.
