RCMP find body of missing Calgary man presumed drowned in Smoothstone Lake

Jul 3, 2019 | 11:52 AM

The body of a missing canoeist who is presumed to have drowned in Smoothstone Lake has been found.

Green Lake RCMP said in a media release they were making patrols with help from the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) on the lake on June 30 when the body was located along the shoreline.

Police said his family was notified.

The 27-year-old from Calgary and a friend were camping in the area when the man left the campsite to go fishing in a canoe.

He did not return and a fisherman discovered his canoe submerged in the middle of the lake.

RCMP previously said the man was not wearing a life-jacket when he left the camp and the wind had increased a great deal while he was gone.

Smoothstone Lake is located 139 kilometres north-east of Meadow Lake and is east of Dore Lake.
