Local farmers win award

A pair of farmers from the Shellbrook were recently recognized for their work.

Jason and Jenna Ranger were honoured by Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers Program at Canada’s Farm Progress Show in Regina last week.

“We were quite honoured to be chosen, the group of nominees that were chosen were all good farmers,” Jason said.

Once nominated, the Rangers had to fill out an application. Judges reviewed a variety of categories on their farm operations.

Part of the application included the couple writing down the history of their farm and what they did to get to where they are currently. While this proved to be somewhat of a challenge, Jason said it was worthwhile.

“It was a good exercise to do because I think sometimes we’re so focused on what’s going on currently in our businesses that we kind of forget about how we got to where we are,” he said.

Right now the Rangers farm just over 10,000 acres, where their crops include canola, oats, wheat, peas and lentils. The two have been growing their operation slowly by buying some land and renting other parcels.

Jason credits the couple’s employees for their success. They currently have four full time employees and bring on more during busy harvest and seeding times. He said they’ve been able to hold onto their team and have had low turnover which has made it easier on them.

Going into the future Jason said he is happy with the current size of the farm and is also looking forward to new technology which could be coming in the near future like autonomous equipment. He added he and Jenna are both happy to be part of the outstanding farmers and their alumni.

“Once you’re in the group everybody seems to come back every year as alumni, it’s a good networking opportunity every year at that event,” he said.
