Matthews set to make season as Bombers prepare for fearsome Eskimos defence
WINNIPEG — Head coach Mike O’Shea is looking forward to watching free-agent prize receiver Chris Matthews make his season debut with the Blue Bombers on Thursday.
The six-foot-five veteran gives quarterback Matt Nichols a big target as Winnipeg (1-0) plays its home-opener against an Edmonton Eskimos (2-0) squad that features a red-hot, sack-happy defence.
“Well, you’re hoping to see 10 touchdowns, but I don’t know if that’s gonna happen,” O’Shea said with a smile, when asked what Matthews might show.
“He’s gonna make some plays and he’s gonna be where he’s supposed to be. And if there’s a 50-50 ball, he’s gonna contest it and he’s gonna come down with it. That’s what we expect and that’s what he expects.”
