Celebrate the Long Weekend with PA National Park

Jul 29, 2016 | 2:04 PM

Hot days and a full event calendar resulted in a whirlwind July in Prince Albert National Park. A record number of people attended Canada Day festivities, Children’s Festival activities, and a number of community events.

August is sure to be just as busy; lakes are warm, campgrounds are booked almost to capacity, and event planning is well underway! Feel free to circulate this information with colleagues, tourism partners, and the public.

1.        RELAX this August long weekend in Prince Albert National Park

Did you know that most school divisions have classes resuming before the Labour Day Weekend? Head to Waskesiu this August long weekend to enjoy lake-life before kids are back to school!

Set up your towel on the main beach where you’ll be surrounded by all the action; beach volleyball, camp kitchens, ice cream shops, and watercraft or bike rentals are all within walking distance. Need a break from the heat? The Nature Centre is a short walk away and offers the opportunity to learn about park wildlife and interpretive programs offered throughout the park.

If you prefer to soak up the sun in a quieter space, Waskesiu Lake has 5 other sandy beaches. Pack a picnic and a Frisbee then drive to one of these beaches to enjoy quality time with family and friends.

2.        ADVENTURE this August Long Weekend in Prince Albert National Park

·        Rent a bike or tighten up your hikers to explore over 150km worth of trails. Bring your camera so you can share stories about all the wildlife you see!

·        Explore countless lakes and rivers throughout the park. Canoe, kayak, stand-up-paddle board, and even motorboat rentals are available. Contact the Visitor Centre for more information.

·        Soar through the trees on a zipline tour at Eco-Adventures Elk Ridge.

·        Pick up a Prince Albert National Park fishing license and reel in a big catch.

3.        DANCE the Night Away

Two dances in Waskesiu this August Long Weekend will keep you on your feet!

Waskesiu Summer Dance: Rock of Ages – Saturday, July 30th at 9:00pm
Dance the night away to the music of the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s at the Community Hall! Tickets are $15.00 each and can be purchased at the door or in advance at the Waskesiu Chamber of Commerce office.

Grey Owl Howl Family Dance – Sunday, July 31st at 7:30pm
Games, food, dancing, and prizes at the Community Hall!
Tickets are available at the door or in advance at Outter Limits Waskesiu or The Waskesiu Trading Post. Tickets – $15.00 for one adult and up to 2 children, $5.00 per additional child.

4.        Get Ready to HOWL!

Howl at the wolves in this family favourite activity! The Wolf Howl program runs Saturday nights at 7:00 throughout August (starting August 6th). Meet at the main beach to learn about wolves. Bring your car; following the program a caravan of vehicles will head out into the forest and participants will practice howling. Lucky groups may even get a wolf to howl back!

For a list of all interpretive activities occurring this summer, pick up a Summer Program schedule at the park entrance gates or the Waskesiu Visitor Centre.

5.        SAVE the Date: Waskesiu Lakeside Music Festival August 26th – 28th
