P.A. triathlete breaks record at Frank Dunn Triathlon

Aug 7, 2016 | 2:05 PM

It was a hot one, but a Prince Albert triathlete managed to overcome the heat to break the record for fastest female racer at the 2016 Frank Dunn Triathlon.

Christina Charles, running the triathlon for the 11th time in Waskesiu on Sunday, Aug. 6, came in fifth overall and was the first woman to cross the finish line. She finished with a time of three hours, one minute and 43 seconds.

“It was definitely my goal coming in,” Charles said of being the first woman across the line. “I was pretty sure I was going to do a personal best, but I just wasn’t sure by how much. Given the conditions I’m happy with how it went.”

This was her fourth consecutive women’s title win.

She said the race started well with a busy swim on the calm lake and a low-wind bike ride, but the humidity took its toll during the run. She said she “just had to embrace the humidity,” to make it to the finish line.

Next year Charles hopes to shave a few more minutes off her time.

“I want to be the first woman to break three hours,” she said. “It didn’t quite happen today but I got 365 days of training for next year.”

Full results from the triathlon can be found online.
