Telemiracle 43 getting support from local organization

An event that has become synonymous with Saskatchewan is soon set to begin for the 43rd time.

Telemiracle, the annual telethon which has helped countless people though the generosity of the province’s residents.

One local organization that has been a perennial supporter of Telemiracle is the Prince Albert Kinsmen.

Kinsmen President Brad Amy outlined why Telemiracle is so important.

“We’re the stop gap where government funding ends and there’s still a need. When people need something for a surgery, for a child, they come to us and the Kinsmen foundation comes through if they can,” Amy said.

Amy went on to say he’s heard and seen remarkable stories over the years of people and organizations who have been helped. He added that Prince Albert and area always does an amazing job of fundraising for this event.

Geneen Guinan, a senior foundation administrator with Telemiracle said locally, Prince Albert has been the recipient of funding.

“In September last year the board gifted $16,039 to the St. John Community School,” Guinan explained.

Guinan said the money will be used to help build a sensory room. Sensory rooms use a variety of equipment and tools such as; weighted blankets, modular seating and mirrors to help children with limited communication skills through the senses of touch and sight.

Michell Thomas, the vice principal of St. John Community School said this type of financial support is very important.

“There is a lot of fiscal restraints,” Thomas said. “We do lots of great things with our kids but with this money it just allows us to enrich which strategies we use to help kids learn.”

Thomas grew up watching Telemiracle on TV and said seeing how the money goes back into the community is great.

Geneen Guinan said on behalf of the foundation they wanted to acknowledge the donors who make every Telemiracle a success.

“Thank you for always giving from the heart. From donations of $1 to $1000, everything is well received. That money goes a long way,” she concluded with a phrase we’re all familiar with, “Ring those phones!”

There’s still an opportunity to help raise funds before the big event kicks off this weekend. The Prince Albert Kinsmen will be teaming up with Humpty’s Family Restaurant for their annual pancake breakfast this Friday.
