British Columbia’s Wark upsets Manitoba’s Fleury in Scotties tiebreaker

SYDNEY, N.S. — British Columbia’s Sarah Wark has earned the final spot in the championship round at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

The Scotties rookie defeated Manitoba’s Tracy Fleury 8-5 in a tiebreaker game Thursday morning at the national women’s curling championship.

Wark (4-3) joined a group from Pool A that includes Alberta’s Chelsea Carey (7-0), Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville and Ontario’s Rachel Homan (both 5-2).

Team Wild Card’s Casey Scheidegger (6-1) leads the four teams that came out of Pool B. She’s followed by Saskatchewan’s Robyn Silvernagle (5-2), Prince Edward Island’s Suzanne Birt (5-2) and Canada’s Jennifer Jones (4-3).

Fleury struggled from the start of play at Centre 200, wrecking on a guard in the second end to give up a steal of three. She had a chance for a double takeout in the fourth, but the shooter rolled out to settle for a single.

Wark had a nice hit in the fifth end to hang on for a single but Fleury delivered an open hit for two in the sixth to make it a one-point game.

B.C. broke it open in the eighth end as Fleury was heavy with a tapback, giving Wark a steal of three and an 8-3 advantage.

Fleury drew for two in the ninth but Wark made no mistake with hammer coming home and a healthy lead.

The championship round begins Thursday afternoon and continues through Friday night.

The top four teams — with preliminary-round records carrying over — will advance to the Page Playoffs on Saturday. The semifinal and final are set for Sunday.
