P.A. Raiders biggest fan talks love for the team

It was an outstanding year for hockey fans of all ages in Prince Albert, as they witnessed the Prince Albert Raiders become WHL Champions for only the second time in franchise history.

The championship, however; might have meant slightly more to one Raider fan. As far as sports fans go, 96-year-old Margaret Foot sits in a category all her own.

“Ever since the Raiders were in Prince Albert, and I guess before they were called the Raiders, I’ve been a fan,” Foot told paNOW.

“But I’m just a regular Raiders fan, I’m not anything special. I’ve always enjoyed watching them. This year was no different; I just like the Raiders.”

Born in 1922, Foot reminisced about watching teams of days past – specifically the Prince Albert Mintos and Prince Albert Blackhawks, both teams which played in the SJHL, as early as the late 1930s and into the 1940s.

“It means everything to me for them to win. You know how old I am do you? I’ll be 97 in September, so this means everything,” Foot said with a laugh.

“I certainly hope they win again this year. They’re all very, very, good boys, and I wish them all the luck in the world.”

Foot hasn’t allowed her age to impact her super-fan status. She is known for never missing a Raider game over the years, often curling up with her radio and a Raider’s jersey during matches and following along with the action.

Being a superfan comes with its privileges it seems, as Foot was recently visited by Raider Head Coach Mark Habscheid, who brought along the WHL Championship Ed Chynoweth Cup, posing with Foot for photos and talking about the team.

“That was wonderful. I always wanted to meet him, this coach. I’ve met other ones over the years, but I don’t know, to me this one has been more special,” Foot said.

“I don’t know if it’s because of the winning of the cup or what, but to me he is the best coach I’ve ever seen. I was certainly pleased when he told me he would still be the coach next year.”

Foot noted she hopes to see the Raiders perform well again in the upcoming season, saying she will be following along with the action.
