Field lacrosse comes to Prince Albert

Jun 7, 2019 | 11:30 PM

For the first time ever, field lacrosse was played in Prince Albert on Friday under the lights at Max Clunie Field.

The Prince Albert Under-18 Attack played in the main event of the evening during the field lacrosse festival. Although they lost the game 7-5 to the Yorkton Fighting Pikes, it will still be a special night to play on their home field.

“It’s really exciting. It’s nice to see that people came out and supported us and all the players were happy about it, “Attack captain Davin Ikert said. “It’s not the result we wanted, but we’re excited to play tomorrow.”

Lacrosse has been a staple in Prince Albert for almost two decades, with Joe Bexson but that’s been played mostly in hockey rinks—or box lacrosse as it’s formally known.

His son Javan Bexson thought outside of the box, so to speak and helped form the Attack, who competed at provincials last year before getting to play on home soil this year.

“Really getting the box game super established in P.A., we didn’t want to take on too much too soon,” said Attack coach Javan Bexson, who is also now the president of the Prince Albert Lacrosse association. “We felt last year was a good opportunity, we had a good group of guys to start and go to provincials. We wanted to build off that last year and showcase it. We had some field camps this winter which helped promote and build the field aspect as well.”

The first Attack goal on home soil was scored by Hayden Ulriksen. Tanner Vancoughnett had a pair of goals for the Attack.

Jarvis Zawatsky had a hat trick for the Fighting Pikes. Carson Miller, former Prince Albert Raiders forward, had the game winner for Yorkton.

The field lacrosse festival takes place all day on Saturday, featuring teams from Prince Albert, Yorkton and Sturgis at both the Under-18 and Under-15 levels.
