New outdoor basketball courts officially open

Jun 1, 2019 | 4:42 PM

The brand new outdoor basketball courts near the Alfred Jenkins Field House are officially open, and to help celebrate the event, a three-on-three tournament was held Saturday..

A total of nine teams competed in the mini tournament, sponsored by Canadian Tire. Jack Wilkinson was among the players and told paNOW he was impressed with the courts..

“We don’t really have great outdoor courts right now in the city, and this is a nice location,”: he said.

Caleb Gunter, who plays for the Carlton Crusaders Senior Boys basketball, was also playing in the tournament, along with two of his school teammates. He said the courts offer a great opportunity for the team to stay in shape during the off season.

“Teach chemistry is going to be up next year so we can come hit these courts over the summer and see where it goes from there,” he said.

The winning team took home a $500 gift certificate from Canadian Tire. There was also a $250 gift certificate for the second place, and a $100 gift certificate for third place.

Canadian Tire Owner Malcolm Jenkins, who helped make the new courts a reality, told paNOW he was impressed with the response to the tournament, and promised next year to have a trophy.

The courts are now available for booking by calling the Alfred Jenkins Field House.
