Mountain Bike and Music Festival returning for ninth year

Jun 1, 2019 | 2:00 PM

Little Red River Park could be in store for a bright new upgrade, with help from Saskatchewan’s biggest mountain bike festival.

Money raised from next weekend’s Pine Needle Mountain Bike and Music Festival will be used to upgrade the lighting on the park’s trails to LEDs. Festival Organizer Mike Horn said the park is enjoyed by a lot of different people.

“People run, bike, ski, walk and use those trails so we figured that was a good place to put the money,” he said.

Horn said he would like to see the new lights installed by the fall. Over the past eight years, the festival has raised $50,000 for the community.

As of Friday, there were 62 people pre-registered for the event June 9. Participants can enter as a team of four, team of two or as an individual. Last year there were 150 participants. Horn said he has tried to make the event bigger and better each year.

“Last year was our biggest attendance by far for the mountain bike portion, and for the music we have invested more into the stage and the bands,” he said.

A total of six bands will perform on stage this year. There will also be a performance by Magician Roger Boucher, and Comedian Kelly Taylor has signed on as the event’s master of ceremonies. The Prince Albert’s Raiders have also agreed to have the WHL Championship Trophy on site for photo opportunities.

“As the festival grows momentum and people really start to understand what [the festival] is, we just want to keep going in a forward motion,” Horn said.
