First time Clunie-Cooper Memorial has co-champions

May 31, 2019 | 10:17 PM

In the entire 14-year history of the Clunie-Cooper Memorial Professional Bull Riding event, there have never been co-champions before Friday night at the Art Hauser Centre.

But that all changed when Jordan Hansen from Okotoks, Alta and Jake Lockwood from Volborg, Mont., made history as they both shared the top spot by scoring 171 points on two rounds.

Hansen had a 84.5 in the opening round, before riding a two-day high ride of 86.5 points. Lockwood had an 85.5 score in the first round, and rode it again to tie Hansen.

The two guys ahead of them after the first round were Weston Hartman from Mandan, N.D., who had 86 points, and Aaron Roy from Yellow Grass, Sask., who had 85.5 points. Both were bucked off in the championship round.

Cole Wagner won Day 1 on Thursday. He only needed his long-go score of 85 points to win, as no rider put together two successful rides.

Sisterly love

As is tradition each year, the Max Clunie Ring of Honour is presented to a person, or people in this year’s case, in the local bull riding and rodeo family that portray his passionate character each day.

Max’s big sisters in Alyson Cullum and Meghan Byrne never thought they’d be blessed with the ring, but received that very honour moments before the event began.

“It was very surprising,” Alyson said. “I didn’t think we’d ever get it, so we were a little shocked but excited.”

Max did before he passed away in a 2011 plane crash with fellow rodeo enthusiast and friend Wade Cooper. He loved the event and likely would have found himself in the arena one way or another either as a volunteer or a fan.

“Our brother really enjoyed it, so I’m sure if he was still here, he’d be involved somehow—but probably not riding,” Alyson laughed.

Seeing as they are their big sisters, they still playfully tease Max even now.

When asked what Max was like, Meghan gave him compliments before seeing an opportunity for a joke.

“He was vibrant, young, outgoing and a little bit bad. I’m a little worried about what he would have been in two more years,” Meghan said as she and Alyson chuckled. “But everyone seemed to like him.”
