Barbecue fire prompts safety tips from P.A fire department

An out of control grill on the 900 block of Second Street East was the subject of an evening callout by the Prince Albert Fire Department around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Luckily the owner of the barbecue extinguished the flare up by the time crews arrived.

Deputy Chief Alex Paul, said this is a good time to remind residents to clean out their grill.

“Just make sure you’re cleaning it regularly each spring,” Paul said. “Depending on how much barbecuing you do throughout the year, you should be disassembling it, taking your grates out and getting rid of all that built up grease and food that has dropped through.”

He added it’s a good idea to keep your barbecue about one meter way from the house to avoid any heat transfer.

In the event your barbecue flame gets of control, Paul recommends turning off the gas, closing the lid and calling the fire department, if necessary.

He strongly advised against throwing water on a grease fire, as that could cause the flames to explode and spread.

He also reminded residents that a fire ban is in effect for those living on the north side of the river.
