YWCA Settlement Services celebrates new home

‘We are here and this is what we do.’ That was the message delivered Thursday afternoon at a grand opening celebration for Prince Albert YWCA Settlement Services.

The organization has been using the building formerly occupied by Wesley United Church for close to a year, but Manager Carolyn Hobden said they wanted to spread awareness to the public about what they provide.

“We have people from all over the globe here and this is a place where they have a common bond,” she said.

In addition to the Settlement Services main office, there is plenty of room for family events. The building also offers opportunities for language classes and counseling services.

“And some people may be out in the community working and they still need extra help with “people work” or understanding letters, so they will come after work to talk to settlement counselors,” Hobden said.

Abdul Karim Mohammed, formerly from Sudan, has been living in Prince Albert for close to a year and has been taking language, employment and computer classes.

“I think this is a very good place because many people like from different cultures and countries come here and you can learn a lot from them,” he said.

Hobden estimated they currently have over 150 clients with 80 people taking classes.
