Muskoday school aims to promote literacy

Muskoday First Nation Community School will be hosting a Family Literacy Night tomorrow, May 15, which will feature food and fun events for all in attendance.

The school has been hosting literacy nights since September thanks to a grant from the Sask. Literacy Network, all with the common goal of promoting literacy within the family and community, according to Office Coordinator Stephanie Bear.

“We received a grant from the Saskatchewan Community Literacy Fund, and we have been having a different themed literacy night every month,” Bear said.

“This month is a sports theme, and we’ve received some donations from JerBear Books, who donated $150 worth of books, so what we’re doing is trying to get families to come out, have a nice meal – which is usually on theme with the theme of the month, and then we will have between three to five stations that are all literacy-themed.”

Bear noted following this month’s sports theme, families would be designing sports flags for whichever teams the families support, as well as a sports themed jeopardy room, and traditional games held in the gym, with a kickball game between all the families in attendance.

“We’ve had a really good turnout, we’ve been having more and more families coming out and it’s been really fun. We normally have between 80 to 120 people attending,” Bear said.

“Part of what we’re trying to do is promote family literacy. We want to promote families reading together, and increase family libraries so these children and their families have access to books both at school and at home.”

The event will run from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
