P.A. Mayor makes ‘sweater bet’ with Mayor of Vancouver

May 8, 2019 | 2:12 PM

There is now a bit more riding on the outcome of the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) final between the Prince Albert Raiders and Vancouver Giants.

Prince Albert Mayor Greg Dionne made a friendly bet with Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart. The ‘sweater’ bet, which was made official prior to the start of Game 3 Tuesday night, dictates that if the Raiders win the WHL final, Stewart would wear a Raiders jersey at his next council meeting.

“He has to wear it for the full meeting, he can’t just wear it for the start and he has to wear it for the whole day council,” Dionne said.

Dionne explained he has agreed to do the same if the Giants win the series. The two mayors also agreed a photo must be taken to show proof, and the local media would be allowed to use it. Dionne said he was very pleased to see the Raiders win Game 3 by a score of 8-2.

“I should have bet more,” Dionne joked.

Mayor Stewart has already been quite vocal on Twitter about the bet. Dionne, who does not have a Twitter account, laughed about it and said the tone of his phone call with Stewart was very friendly.

“He was excited and he was very pleased with the positive comments they are getting back about our community,” Dionne said.

Game 4 of the WHL championship series takes place tonight in Langley. The puck drops at 8 p.m. local time.
