Water levels much lower this year at Manitou Beach

The warm and dry conditions are welcome when it comes to water levels at Manitou Beach.

The Little Manitou Lake experienced very high water levels over recent years where businesses along the shore of Manitou Beach were threatened and some sustained damage.

Patrick Boyle with the Water Security Agency (WSA) said the latest reading is down .32 meters from peak level last May.

“Spring runoff wasn’t an issue and currently isn’t an issue in that region,” Boyle said. “Hot, dry days is just going to drive that level down.”

Saskatchewan Government investments and efforts by the WSA including a dike that was installed and then raised 2.5 kilometres has helped the situation. The dike kept the water from reaching the shoreline and protected nearby businesses.

Boyle said residents in the area are still a little concerned but the continuation of warm weather would bring comfort to the community.

“Everyone is little worried during every spring runoff in that area just given where the water level has been,” Boyle said.

Danceland is one of the businesses on the shore of Manitou that suffered when water reached the building and caused $350,000 in damages. A committee is trying to fundraise to pay for repairs.
