Cooke Municipal hoping to hit below par in 2019

The golf course reported a loss of $173,580 for 2018. A large part of that deficit was covered by a course fleet surplus of $114,021, leaving the golf course with a remaining loss of $59,559.

Councillor for Ward 4, Don Cody, expects the deficit will not be repeated this year.

“It’s one of the first years we’ve had a deficit. That doesn’t happen very often at the Cooke,” Cody said. “Cooke is usually pretty bang on, and in fact, makes a fair little profit. We’re hoping that’s the way it will be this year.”

Cody is excited for the upcoming season to get underway.

“The new irrigation system is in. The course looks good already and I’m sure it’s going to look even better once we get some of the warm weather going.”

Darcy Myers, head golf pro for Cooke Municipal Golf Course is excited to showcase the new irrigation system that replaced the four-decade-old system they had previously.

“Instead of fixing leaks and breaks, hopefully we can use that man power more effectively on the golf course,” Myers said.

Myers said the early spring thaw definitely helps the course.

“The last few years we’ve had some later starts, so any April golf is kind of a bonus. If the weather holds up, we’ll have some April golf this year,” he said.

With the warmer temperatures, P.A. golfers have been eager to book a tee time.

“The phone has been ringing off the hook since the Masters, I think that gets everyone a little anxious and excited for the golf season,” Myers said.

Myers said they’re tentatively looking at April 24 as a potential start date.
