Regina joins worldwide protests for climate change action

Protests were held all over the world on Sunday, with large crowds demanding action on climate change.

In Regina around 100 people rallied in front of the Legislature and marched along Albert Street chanting “Climate Justice” and “No pipeline No problem”.

Catherine Gibson believes the time is now to tackle this issue.

“We waited too long so we really got to be aggressive now and cut back on fossil fuels and cut back on consumption.”

Among the protest signs there was a solar panel held by James Dennis. He's the president of Sound Solar Systems and was at the rally to promote producing your own power.

“Thinking of the environment by not using as much coal. Solar is cheaper in the long run than what the grid is right now.”

Dennis says Saskatchewan is a great place for solar panels as we get over 1,400 hours of sunlight per year.

For other protestors like Janelle Pewapsconias, the environment became an important issue after she had a child.

“I want him to experience the same benefits that I did. Being able to go into a water body without having fear that your going to come with some sort of skin disorder. Or being able to come outside without having cancer in a few years.”

About 120 world leaders will get together on Tuesday for a United Nations Climate Summit in New York. They will discuss creating a new global climate treaty by the end of 2015. Prime Minister Stephen Harper is not planning to attend.
