SIAST renamed Saskatchewan Polytechnic

Sep 24, 2014 | 1:52 PM

The Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) has changed its name becoming Saskatchewan Polytechnic as of Wednesday morning.

“As a polytechnic, we are student-focused and employer-driven,” said Dr. Larry Rosia, president and CEO of Saskatchewan Polytechnic. “What makes us different is our emphasis on applied learning that meets labour market needs, thus equipping students to build rewarding careers.”

Polytechnics offer bachelor degrees, apprenticeship training, certificates and diplomas. The move will make it easier for the former SIAST to apply for and offer new degree programs.

“Having a new name and the new profile, attracting international and national attention, will allows us to increase our profile [and] probably attract more research dollars,” Rosia said.

He said it’s partly about rebranding, helping to advertise and promote the post-secondary institute. That comes at a cost of $400,000. Part of that was designing the new logo which features a grey and purple “energy path”.

He explained how, before, SIAST was known more of a nursing and trades school. He said they are much more than that offering 150 programs in the business, health and science and technology areas with graduates working in every sector in the economy.

Changes won’t take effect immediately but instead stretched out over three to four years, Rosia added.

About 26,000 students receive training each year in programs on campuses in Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert.
