Children at the Small World Day Care Co-op in Prince Albert took part in a Little Fox Run on Friday. Candida Bourassa, executive director at the day care, said they decided to hold the run to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation.

“We feel that everyone wants a cure for cancer and everyone’s lives are touched by cancer. We just thought we’d help out … because it’s a good initiative,” she said.

Terry Fox has always been one of Bourassa’s role models and she said it’s good to get the kids learning about Terry Fox at a young age.

“[We] start educating our children young and hopefully they grow up wanting to give and to help,” she said.

The National Terry Fox School Run day was held on Wednesday and Bourassa said it made an impression on her five-year-old son. She hopes having the Terry Fox walk at the day care will have the same positive effect on the children.

“He came home and would not stop talking about it. He was talking about how this man ran across the country and raised money for he called it, a sickness. He wasn’t sure about the word, but like even that young, they start to understand,” she said.

Bourassa said since she became the executive director last year, she wanted to hold this sort of event at the day care. Everything started coming together last month and the day care started raising money. All of the money the walk raised, about $580, goes directly to the Terry Fox Foundation.

The kids held signs and banners while they walked from the day care and looped around the block before heading back. Bourassa said the staff and children enjoyed it and they are hoping to make it an annual walk.

“I’d like to challenge all the other day cares for next year.”
